AwareBear Computers in Pittsford NY will be talking about
keeping your data safe in an event of data loss. When it comes to data recovery
in Pittsford NY Aware Bear is #1.

Computer disaster planning is something that has to be
considered at some point for everyone including people and businesses. “The
majority of people today depend on computers” says Aware Bear Computers owner
Andre Leite Alves in Pittsford
NY.

Power surges, hard drive failures (mechanical, software and
virus) are common risks we all face when storing our data. Many people have no
backups of anything, pictures, music, documents and emails. “We see that happen
in a daily basis and how expensive it is to get your data back once data
recovery is needed.” Says Arthur Leite Alves from AwareBear in Pittsford NY.

EDC or electrostatic discharge is a scientific term for
static electricity.  Getting shocked by
your refrigerator may hurt you little however the same type of shock may put
your electronic device out of commission. Aware Bear Computers of Pittsford, NY
(New York)
will give you tips on how to avoid ECD on your computer and other electronic
components.

Tip number one: Climate Inside your Home or Office

“With computers, some humidity is actually a good thing”
says Arthur Leite, Aware Bear Computers researcher and technician.
Electro-static affects greatly increases as humidity decreases. “At the Aware
Bear locations, we have to make sure not only that our rooms are in the right
temperature to work on computers, but also we always have to keep our eyes on
the humidity, sometimes I  feel like I
work at a salt water fish tank hehe” Says Michael W. sales rep. of Aware Bear
in Pittsford.

Here are some ways that Aware Bear Computers’ computer
department recommends in preventing ECD on your electronics components simply
by adjusting the climate in your home or office:

Step 1: Open a window. “Just by opening one window is
already enough to balance the environment.” Says Matt P. Aware Bear on-site
technician. He also added that much like osmosis, homes usually have more
electric charge specially here in the North East, due to dry air from the
furnace and from the A/C. By leaving a window open, you can balance the
environment of your home or office.

At Aware Bear Computer’s Pittsford location, “the door is
always open” and the building has an open concept to it. “Walls were taken out
and space was open, this way we can allow the natural flow of air coming in and
out of the building, resulting in a better environment to prevent ECD from occurring
on all the equipment.” Added Andre Leite Alves of AwareBear. “Everything from
the location and distribution of air from the furnace to the entrance and where
the air exits have all been planed to work in harmony at Aware Bear.” Added
Andre Leite Alves. “Of course, at your home you don’t have to go all that
crazy, but just open a window or two and that should not only freshen up your
home, but also reduce static electricity as well” Added Mike A.

Step 2: Add a humidifier on big buildings

Aware Bear onsite computer services is not only responsible
for helping people’s computer issues at their homes, but medium to large
companies as well. “Server rooms are definitely a place you want to make sure
that there is a controlled environment inside. However usually these server
rooms are located in a secure area of the building with little natural
ventilation.” explains Matt P. Aware Bear’s on-site technician. “In those types
of scenario, we ask companies to invest in a humidifier in those rooms just to
maintain the climate balanced.” Added Aware Bear’s Arthur Leite. However not
all server rooms without natural ventilation is in danger, sometimes, couple
server rooms may have too much humidity and that can cause other problems as
well. “ One that we noticed that was boarder line too much humidity was at the
Pittsford Raging Rhinos stadium at Paetec
Park. The raw concrete
wall of their server room actually brings in moisture from the ground as well
as from the air. However tests were conducted and the amount of water particles
in the air was beneficial and no dust were found inside server components.”
Explained Andre Leite Alves.

Step 3. Clean up!

Aware Bear is crazy about cleaning! “We do not want anything
do with dust, as a matter of fact if we see a computer that comes in and it’s
dusty, we will open it up and clean it.” –says Michael W. Aware Bear sales rep.
Aware Bear does that for two reasons. One to help prolong the life of the
customer’s computers and two, to keep our repair facilities clean and dust free.
“We have to educate our clients in maintaining their computers clean on the
inside, and the best step is to make sure the environment they live in is clean
on the outside.” Says Andre Leite Alves of Aware Bear computer department.  AwareBear also stresses for people not to
smoke near their computers “because it will kill your computer faster than it
will kill you”.

Step 4:  Your body may
be the worst enemy

Did you know that the average person can carry up to 25,000
volts of static energy? Sounds like a lot huh, but since the current level of
energy is so low usually people don’t notice it. Make sure that if you are
going to open your computer or another component near long haired pets, long
carpets, near dryers, and anything that would cause you to get a shock from
touching something make from metal. Aware Bear Computers of Pittsford, NY (New
York) technicians need to be static free all the time while working with
computer components and would like to thank all of those who read this article
and hope it helps you prolong the life of your electronic components.

The other side of the story is when the backup is done on
CDs or DVDs and the disks do not get labeled correctly. That can get very
messy, having a pile of disks and not knowing what is inside. As technology
evolves the backup media gets more and more stable. In the 90s Zip drives were
great however they were magnetic and got damaged very easily.

When the first CDs hit the market they were expensive and
took a while to write them. Finally DVDs that could hold up to 4.7 gigs were
out and that was the ultimate backup solution. Today we rely on the 4,7 gig and
8.5 gig DVDs, the 8.5 still a bit expensive and records a bit slow however once
it gets done recording it works like any other disk.

“We keep a few Iomega Zip drives (100 and 250), tape drives,
floppy drives around the office. People do not realize that the media they used
a few years back is not available and they no longer have the devices to read.”
Says Aware Bear owner Andre Leite Alves.

It is a good idea to keep checking in the new technologies
so we don’t end up with obsolete media that no new computer can read. Arthur
Leite Alves also points out that the optical media has a shelf life like
anything else. A few years back we moved all the Aware Bear Computers data from
zip drives into CDs. Five years later we moved the data from the CDs into DVDs.
That opened a lot of space, owner Andre Alves has plans to move the data into
8.5 gig DVDs and cut the DVD usage in half.

By doing that Aware Bear is sure that the data is being
stored in Medias that can be easily used. It would not be of much help if
someone had all their backup done in Zip disks and got a new computer today and
could not get any of the old data off the disks.
